Even as a reporter, Julie Carey sees traditional media changing in the near future, specifically for the millennial generation.

Elon University's School of Communications Advisory Board was in town Friday to hear from students and faculty and most importantly see the new additions and improvements to campus. For students, this was an opportunity to hear about professionals who are doing what we want to do post graduation. NBC 4 field reporter in D.C. Julie Carey, spoke to our class about her experience working for an NBC affiliate and specifically in the DMV area.

Carey discussed a lot about where she sees broadcast and traditional media going in the future. She noted the need to redefine content and adapt more new and unique platforms for the millennial generation. Facebook Live was a topic of discussion, as a class we brainstormed some new ideas which both she, as a reporter, and the class as millennials could see making a lasting impact.

Working in the hub of D.C. and Northern Virginia, Carey has covered every Virginia election since 1993. A friend of Tim Kaines, Carey got the second interview with him after he announced he would be Hilary Clinton's running mate, something she earned for sticking with the business and making connections. Carey demonstrated to our class the dedication she has to her community. The decision to work at NBC 4, was partly due to the market itself, but a larger part was having the oportunity to connect with the local community. Carey is able to make connections with community members and political figures, and spend time with her family as well.
