Elon might be nationally recognized for both its Business and Communication programs and even the Performing Arts program as well. Yet, the Elon Phoenix Wind Ensemble is a hidden treasure only discoverable to a few after their recent fall concert.
This orchestra consists of 40 members and together these teachers, students and community members performed this year's concert with the theme Around the World. This organization consists of a wide range of members and a variety of wind instruments, and with practice once a week, Elon students can gain credit for their musical talent.
Kailey Tracy was an audience attendant who was there to support her friend, Elizabeth Bilka, as she performed songs from France, Japan, Russia, China and Mexico. Tracy wasn't aware of the talented students and community members who performing in this ensemble.
"It's definitely different than the typical music I listen to," says Tracy. "It is incredible what they can do with those instruments.
Another audience member, Andrew Feather was there to support a friend. Feather had never been to an orchestra concert such as this, and was not even sure what to expect.
"Everyone up on stage has so much talent," he said. "I can't imagine being able to read that music and memorizing all the songs."
Elizabeth Bilka has been an Elon Phoenix Wind Ensemble member for two years now and it has become one of her favorite parts about Elon. This year with the broad theme of Around the World Bilka was able to learn different sounds from around the world.
While she does love playing the clarinet and learning the music, her favorite part has to be the family she's made.
"I love that I get to meet people not just outside my major at Elon, but also from the community," she says. "It is a great opportunity to meet people you do not normally interact with."
And aside from the peers she's become friends with, Bilka also laughed as she thinks about her two older friends Rita and Julius.
"We all have a great time together," she says.
