Art itself rarely needs an explanation and so the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words," is true in most instances. For Priscilla Frank, an art writer for the Huffington Post, finding the words to describe art on a daily basis has become common place. In an article she wrote for the website titled Kerry James Marshall And The Limitless Power Of Black Paint Frank analyzes the process Kerry James Marshall goes through to create these works of art.
Marshall's art is a renaissance-inspired piece but instead of light skin, he has made all bodies have dark flesh. According to Frank, Marshall experienced many aspects of the Civil Rights movement as he was growing up. The article itself shares five photos of Marshall's work, and interwoven into the story are the details behind how Marshall created them and the inspiration behind his work.
Frank analyzes the art and is obviously a fan of Marshall's technique, and Marshall as a human, himself. She notices the beauty in the art.
"The mythic artists, both male and female, meet the viewer’s gaze with regal composure and resolute solemnity. Donning sculptural hairstyles and voguish ensembles punctuated by dramatic collars and splashes of color, Marshall’s subjects seem aware of their statuses as works of art themselves.
Throughout her essay, Frank describes the life and hardships of Marshall and digs deep into how his passion of black culture is expressed through his art.
