The holiday season has officially begun as families clean up from Thanksgiving dinner and head to the malls, local businesses and Internet for the best deals on gifts. Yet, it is not as peaceful as it may sound.
In an ABC News article identifying the horrors of Black Friday shopping, Alex Hider took a BuzzFeed multimedia piece and translated it into a straight news story. After a day of Black Friday deals, one Nike store in Seattle Washington was torn apart by shoppers. The images showed orange boxes and shoes scattered throughout the store.
The original post was created by BuzzFeed news reporter David Mack who incorporated videos, pictures and short sentence captions. When Hider analyzed this article he formed more complete thoughts and paraphrased the quotes the original version. The opening graph identified the who, what, where, when and why of the piece.
The quotes Hider took from the original were written into the story instead of using the direct quotes Mack used in his article. By paraphrasing, Hider is able to summarize the original story while still giving credit to BuzzFeed.
A final difference between the two pieces is how Hider posted the photos and videos at the bottom of the article, instead of throughout the piece as BuzzFeed did. This shows the unique platform and the new inventive way of storytelling BuzzFeed has created.
